You can always count on The CityPages to deliver a heavy dose of bottom-of-the-barrel liberal pessimism. Not that I'm complaining, because I'm a liberal and I like The CityPages, but this article, which is eye-opening, is also rather down on America. Booo! America by the numbers But actually, it makes a few interesting statements. The short of it: • Twenty percent of Americans think the sun orbits the earth. Seventeen percent believe the earth revolves around the sun once a day • The leading cause of death of pregnant women in this country is murder • Forty-three percent of Americans think torture is sometimes justified • Women are 70 percent more likely to die in childbirth in America than in Europe ::: posted by dan at 6:03 PM :: [ link ] :: (5) comments

I was just thinking, "is my passport still current? I wonder if Norway needs any music teachers?" And the problem is, no one with any influence in this country will ever give credence to that list. Because it's exactly because of the things in that list that make them rich and powerful. And as long as we maintain a mass of ignorant sheep, they will remain in power. So all it would take is a couple media types and maybe a few senators calling it "hogwash," and the chorus of sheep will obediantly repeat, "Hogwash." As much as I hate to admit it, I too, am a sheep. If only for the powerlessness I feel while reading that. OK, no more depressing posts. I come here to cheer me up! Spend more of your free time googling fun images rather watching bad movies! By Kevdogg, at 8:45 AM So much of that is from The European Dream that you have to suspect its garbage. That guy's made a living for 25 years predicting the demise of capitalism and the USA. By , at 12:35 PM america is the last country in the world to recognise the necessity to laugh at itself. the notion of the simpsons, south park, etc being such a hit is inherently hilarious, because although these shows are funny, they show how naive (sp?) americans have been for so long. the good news: the rest of the world laughs at america, but america doesn't hear because it is so self consumed. i'm from australia (and unlike most australians -- i don't hate white americans...every australian loves black americans -- actually - EVERYBODY on the planet LOVES black america, except white america, which ironically, the rest of the world hates...go figure) anyway -- i was asked in 1995 in hawaii by a US lawyer which "state" was australia in? i almost asked him when he was going to 'take his head out of his ass'. i refrained. and avoided a lawsuit in all probability... but what takes the cake is a girl from colorado last year (in LA) telling me i spoke really good english...next time someone says that, i'll say "oh, so do you...congratulations...you could speed up and improve your syntax, grammar, and general intellect, but you speak english very well for an american" just thought "y'all" should know that canada is not wrong... :) By , at 8:16 AM I points the organized religion and politicians being politicians as a career, not selfless service.
