MOVIES I watch movies. On DVD, at the theater, via cable TV. Sometimes I want people to know what I think about the movies I watch, regardless of whether or not they care. I promise I will make my reviews short, but I won't be ashamed to throw around cliches like "beautiful cinematography" and "post-modern irony," so be warned. Monday, May 24, 2004 :::
Why I saw it: because I was over-doped on cold medicine and it was on cable. What I think about it: Woah. Man oh man. Ouch. If I didn't dig Mark Ruffalo so much (who is totally out of place in this movie) I wouldn't even give this one star. Seriously awful on all levels, layers, and interpretations. Puke. Just having to think back on it while trying to write this review is giving me the shudders. I give up. Why I saw it: Because I think Tina Fey is funny. What I think about it: It was fairly amusing and pretty astute about the motives and motivations of teenaged girls, with some very funny observations and a lot of inspired humor. Rather than going for a few big laughs, it mostly stuck to subtle jabs and wry wit in the details (one girl gets ostracized for having made out with a hotdog). Not a genius comedy or anything; it was still just a teen comedy aimed at teen viewers, after all. It'll never be considered a classic (like Heathers) or represent a generation (like The Breakfast Club) or elevate the genre (like Clueless), but it was entertaining and moderately clever and ultimately feel-good.
