MOVIES I watch movies. On DVD, at the theater, via cable TV. Sometimes I want people to know what I think about the movies I watch, regardless of whether or not they care. I promise I will make my reviews short, but I won't be ashamed to throw around cliches like "beautiful cinematography" and "post-modern irony," so be warned. Tuesday, April 05, 2005 :::
Why I saw it: Because the trailer was good and because Rory Gilmore is in it. What I think about it: Sin City is exactly what I expected, so I'm not sure why I was a little disappointed. It's a brutal, grizzly film noir comic book thriller about thugs and pimps and prostitutes and much, much worse. The acting is appropriately campy, the dialogue is pleasingly pulpy, and the plot is about as simple as a movie based on a comic book can be. Surprisingly, they tried so hard to be faithful to the comic books (right down to framing each shot identical to its comic book counterpart) that the movie seems stagnant and slow, even with all its frenetic action. This is one time where maybe a less faithful adaptation would have been more successful. Plus, the story felt a little uninspired, as if it were mostly just added in after the fact to suit the imagery. So I guess it didn't really blow me away like I wanted it to, but any movie that can make Mickey Rourke and Elijah Wood cool again has got to deserve a little extra credit. And to cast Rory Gilmore as a pistol packing prostitute was a stroke of genius. Caution: cannibalism, castrations, beheadings, pedophilia, and dismemberment all play a crucial role in Sin City. I actually didn't think it was as gruesome as all the critics made it out to be, but perhaps I've become a little desensitized. Learn more about it. ::: posted by dan at 2:32 PM :: # |
