MOVIES I watch movies. On DVD, at the theater, via cable TV. Sometimes I want people to know what I think about the movies I watch, regardless of whether or not they care. I promise I will make my reviews short, but I won't be ashamed to throw around cliches like "beautiful cinematography" and "post-modern irony," so be warned. Friday, February 24, 2006 :::
Why I saw it: It got great reviews and I love Philip Seymour Hoffman. What I think about it: Capote is a difficult movie to watch because the main character, Capote himself, is so frustratingly unlikeable, solipsistic and self-important, and yet you want so badly to like him. It creates this inner-struggle, where you want to hug the guy, and then gut-punch him while you have the chance. This isn't so much a biopic as much as it is a staging of a short yet significant portion of Capote's life, as he wrote his masterpiece In Cold Blood. It portrays the author as a brash egocentric jackass who is underwhelmed with everyone except for himself and who is in awe of his own genius, even in the midst of a town being ripped apart by grizzly murders. The audience watches, confused and conflicted, while the surprisingly intelligent, yet tortured suspect is unknowingly manipulated and used by the person he trusts the most. It's impossible to know who to sympathize with in a movie like this, because just as you start to get attached to someone, the film reveals a new character twist that rips the rug out from beneath your feet. The effect is brutal and heart-wrenching. Definitely NOT a feel-good movie, yet it seems to speak profound volumes about the nature of cruelty, manipulation, apathy, and the sadistic tendencies of human beings in general.
