MOVIES
I watch movies. On DVD, at the theater, via cable TV. Sometimes I want people to know what I think about the movies I watch, regardless of whether or not they care. I promise I will make my reviews short, but I won't be ashamed to throw around cliches like "beautiful cinematography" and "post-modern irony," so be warned.

Prime
Rating:

Why I saw it: I like Meryl Streep.

What I think about it: You know the setup: a therapist discovers that the woman she is counseling is actually dating her MUCH younger son, but can't reveal that fact for ethical reasons. The reverse May/December relationship idea is interesting, and the actors do their best with the material, but the movie has little point and drags on for a least 30 minutes longer than it needs to. It's never sure if it wants to be a movie about age-gap relationships, mother/son bonds, or patient/therapist conflicts, and it can't seem to balance all three. Also, some of the characterizations are a bit forced, like the sensitive but masculine wannabe painter basketball-playing totally-sincere younger-man-who-just-needs-someone-to-believe-in-him character, who seems like every woman's fantasy but reality's Unicorn. On the plus side, the setup allows for some very funny moments, and the acting is charming. The music ain't half bad either. Almost everything the movie needs to be seems to be present, it just doesn't seem to have the right pace, focus, or structure. Maybe a re-edit is in order.
