MOVIES I watch movies. On DVD, at the theater, via cable TV. Sometimes I want people to know what I think about the movies I watch, regardless of whether or not they care. I promise I will make my reviews short, but I won't be ashamed to throw around cliches like "beautiful cinematography" and "post-modern irony," so be warned. Monday, October 23, 2006 :::
Why I saw it: We wanted to see a movie nearby and everything else looked terrible. Plus, Stephen Frears is a good director. What I think about it: The plot: The Queen has to battle between the social standards and codes of conduct from her past and the modern pressures created by the media-governed society of the present when dealing with the unexpected death of her ex-daughter-in-law, Princess Di. The good: Helen Mirren makes you forget that you're not watching the actual queen, and the movie is quite adept at humanizing the monarchy while giving you a glimpse of what it might be like to be a member of the royal family. The bad: when all is said and done it's a pretty pointless movie. It's not exactly entertaining enough to stand on its own feet and not really revealing enough to be an eye-opener. It was an interesting time in England, for sure, but probably not interesting enough to center a movie around it. I should have known better. Usually, when a movie garners praise for a particular performance (in this case that of Helen Mirren), it means the movie itself is not so stellar. In this case, it's definitely well made, and the praise for the performance is well-earned, but it just wasn't exactly a good use of my time. Oh well, live and learn.
